What’s in a professional makeup artist’s tool kit?

Great makeup artists know that choosing quality products and having the right tools on hand are essential for achieving a flawless look. While every professional has personal preferences, there are some items that belong in every makeup artist’s tool kit.

Cleanser, Toner, and Moisturizer

A flawless makeup design begins with the best possible canvas. Clients should always cleanse, tone, and moisturize before makeup is applied. Opt for a gentle product that will be safe for even the most sensitive of skin.

Soft Towels

After cleansing, the face will need to be thoroughly dried without irritating the skin. Soft Landings plush microfiber towels provide a luxurious experience. Clients will appreciate having a few of these on hand.

Primers

Once the skin has been prepared, applying a primer will set it up for flawless foundation application. The best kits will include products made for dry, oily, and combination skin types.

Makeup Brushes

Quality makeup brushes provide the control needed to create a professional look. It’s best to have both synthetic and natural bristle brushes on hand. Many artists start with a basic set and then add to the collection over time.  It’s important to note that using a “true” lint-free wipe to clean your brushes will add to the life of your brushes.

Tweezers

Unruly stray hairs can take away from the perfect makeup look. A quality pair of tweezers will solve this problem. They are also a must-have for applying false eyelashes.

Eyelash Curler

Using an eyelash curler on natural lashes helps to bring attention to the eyes. Curling false lashes prior to application will help them look more natural, and the curler can also be used to bind the false lashes to the client’s natural lashes.

Makeup

Choosing makeup brands, colors, and products is where personal preference really comes into play. For best results, the professional makeup kit should include all of the following:

Foundation

Powder

Blush

Eyeshadow

Eyeliner

Mascara

Lip Liner

Lipstick

Wipes and Towels

Lint-free wipes are best for making sure stray fibers don’t ruin your work. Soft Landings 4Squares are 100 percent lint-free, soften when wet, and are indestructible. They are perfect for removing makeup, brow waxing, lash extensions, and brush cleaning.  Using Soft Landings Towels for a disposable mat to put your brushes on while doing a service will look professional and sanitary.

This list is far from comprehensive, and won’t be perfect for every makeup artist. Over time, each professional will learn what products are right for them and modify their kits. Don’t be afraid to experiment and make adjustments as you see fit.
